Before you commit — or recommit — these ten honest questions reveal more about a relationship than any checklist of preferences.
Honest reflection is uncomfortable precisely because it works. These questions are not a test you can pass or fail; they are a way of gathering information about yourself and the relationship you are building.
- What do I need to feel emotionally safe — and do I ask for it?
- How do I usually behave when I feel hurt or ignored?
- What patterns from past relationships keep showing up?
- Do I feel more like myself, or less, in this relationship?
- How do we each handle disagreement, and how do we repair afterwards?
- Are our long-term goals compatible, or are we avoiding the conversation?
- What do I find hardest to say out loud to my partner?
- How do we each show care, and do we recognise it in one another?
- What am I willing to change — and what is non-negotiable for me?
- If nothing changed for five years, would I be content?
Write your answers down and come back to them in a few weeks. Growth is not a ranking; it is a direction. The point is to notice where you are, so you can choose where to go next.
